Moonrise On Mill Street

A boarding house. A law office. A supper club. A home passed down through generations. Since 2023, an inn, and the latest life of a Folk Victorian built in 1890. Nevada City was still a gold rush town when the house went up, a half-block off Broad Street, close enough to hear the Foundry. Its first owner was Mary Elizabeth (Holmes) Beedle, born in 1846, who lived here for decades and died in the house on February 12, 1927, at eighty-one. She left it to her daughter, and the house carried on without her. Jess and Zac bought the property in 2022 and spent the next fourteen months carefully taking it apart. Half of it came down to the studs. They pulled out the old knob-and-tube wiring, ran all new plumbing, and… insulated framing that had spent more than a century with nothing in it but air. Behind the lath was newspaper from the 1920s, still legible, square-cut nails from the 1800s, and old-growth lumber of a quality you simply can't buy anymore. What could stay, stayed: the windows, the trim profiles, the tall proportions of rooms built for a different century. They opened their doors in the summer of 2023. Jess and Zac found this pocket of California in 2015 after one weekend on the Yuba River, and were married in 2019 at the Miner's Foundry, a few minutes' walk down the street. Now it's the four of them and their dog: Finnley, who is five, Forrest, who is two, and Nala, who is nine and has firm opinions about which corner of the back patio gets the afternoon sun.

In their words: we're not an event venue, we're a house that's good at holding a group of people. The Residence and the Carriage Haus share a courtyard at 107 Mill Street, with two big kitchens, two dining rooms, two living rooms, four bedrooms and three bathrooms. Retreats and workshops are what they host most, with groups meeting in the living room and breaking out into five or six other rooms across the two houses, eating at the dining table and taking breaks in the courtyard. Eleven people can sleep on site, so a good part of any group never has to drive anywhere. There is no coordinator on staff and no food menu, but they have preferred vendors they can recommend.
